The piston skirt should not only bear the lateral thrust of the connecting rod, but also ensure the good guidance of the piston, so there should be sufficient pressure area to form a sufficient thickness of the lubricating oil film. Neither because the gap is too large and cylinder knocking, resulting in noise and accelerated wear and also because the gap is too small and cylinder pulling. The tendency is to use thin - walled reinforcement, both to reduce weight and ensure sufficient stiffness to prevent deformation.
The contact area between the piston skirt and the cylinder wall directly affects the friction loss of the engine. However, when the contact area is small, the oil film thickness also decreases. When the oil film thickness is less than the root mean square value of the roughness of the two contact surfaces, boundary lubrication will occur, resulting in an increase in friction work. Shortening the skirt of the piston can reduce the contact surface and reduce the friction work, but it will increase the shaking of the piston and cause the contact stress of the top and bottom of the skirt to rise. It also deteriorates piston performance.
